Melting of polar ice

Photograph by Dan Moore. Photography Contest VII: Winner.
Melting of polar ice. Mr. Moore writes, "Our ship got caught in the ice and had to be freed by a Canadian ice breaker. Global warming – what?? Actually, yes – we could not get through because so much ice broke free further north near the polar ice cap and was blown south into the shipping channels." Mr. Moore will receive a signed copy of Why Evolution Works (and Creationism Fails), which has been donated by one of the authors.

Congratulations, Mr. Moore! That photo is beautiful and poignant, yet at the same time, absolutely terrifying.

Love this, I'd buy it if I saw it in card shop. Was this a business or pleasure trip to the north?

Thank you for the nice comments. This was a National Geographic trip for what was called the Northwest Passage. The sea channels were clear when we left Iceland and even as we rounded Greenland but heavy winds blew this loose ice from the polar ice cap into our path. A Canadian ice breaker had to finally get us out of the ice so we did not make our original destination and had to find a substitute air strip to return to civilization. For us, this was fun; for the polar bears, this is serious. Lots of pictures and description at http://www.pbase.com/mooremedia/nwpassage. --dan
