Remember the old goop Thing Makers from the 1960s and 70's. You had different colored goop and you would put the colors that you wanted to show a pattern first and then you'd pour the main body mold full to make your rubbery thing. Why does gecko skin look like layers of goop were poured into a mold. It looks like intelligent design to me. At least what an elementary school age designer could work up.

It looks like red goop was poured in first and then green goop and then gray goop. These may be homologous to snake and other lizard scales. It might be that the outer edge of the scale gets red pigment in some areas. Red is likely the first pigment put down in the skin and then the signal to put green pigment down follows, but not all patches get the signal to put down red pigment, so some patches are all green while some of the scales on the borders have red on top and green underneath.
