Burrowing owls are native to Boca Raton, Fl., too. That are protected on the FAU campus. Don't know if the iguana invasion there will have any adverse effect on the owls.

Can't see a picture of Burrowing Owls without thinking of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Xuvcpjf1JU
Back when I was much more familiar with this song than I was with birds, I assumed that "burrow owls" were a fiction used for comic effect in the song. I was very pleased to learn they actually exist and are very awesome.
They are adorable!! Burrowing Owls are also found in Southern California... Joshua Tree, Palm Desert, Coachella Valley etc. They don't seem to fly around too much but prefer to hang out with the family on the mound. I guess the shot is the equivalent of them kicking it on the front porch.

We live is SW W. Va. and (probably) don't appear to have burrowing owls.
But we do have Barred Owls - plenty of them, They have a very distinctive call, and when a group of them begin to yelp at each other, it can only be called a hootenany!
A little work with Google will find audio recordings of this sound for the forest.

Me too! I always think of that whenever I hear "burrow owl". I actually checked the comments to see if I was the only one, or if someone else had felt compelled.
