Sondre Stromfjord

Photograph by Malcolm S. Schongalla. Photography contest, Honorable Mention.
Sondre Stromfjord (Søndre Strømfjord), Greenland. Mr. Schongalla writes, "View looking west down the fjord, from an altitude of approximately 500 m. The arctic is one of the environments most significantly affected by climate change. Greenland's icecap has experienced significant peripheral thinning. I am not a geologist, but my lay interpretation of this photograph is that it reflects a region that is primarily Archaean gneiss dated to 2.7-2.8 Ga. A striking, dark-colored band is visible on both sides of the fjord."

Splendid shot, Mr Schongalla! My advice is to print this one really big, frame it, and hang it on your wall.

Thank you for the kind words!

An amazing composition; it makes me think of the landscapes of the neo-romantic painters of a century ago. Magnificently classic: sky, land and sea.

Absolutely beautiful!

Does this speak 'Middle-Earth' to any one else?

Similarly, the highest lake in the world "Tilicho Lake" situated in Nepal also affected due to climate change.

Dunno about Middle Earth... I get more of an Asgard vibe here. This picture would have made a nice backdrop scene for a 19th Century performance of a Wagnerian opera, that sense of vast forces of nature against which even the gods themselves are doomed.
