It's a surprise: Evolution: E&O Issue for Genie

Posted 29 June 2010 by

The new issue of Evolution: Education and Outreach, now online and with a few of the articles free (the rest are behind an accursed paywall), is dedicated to Genie Scott, who will soon be on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon on the annual trip that I have never made. It's a surprise, and I wish I could see her face. From Niles and Greg Eldredge's Editorial:
Which brings us to our second happy task of this editorial: our pride and pleasure in presenting a (Surprise!) Special Issue in honor of Eugenie Scott, Founding Director of the National Center for Science Education (and a founding member of our own editorial board!). Genie and her organization have long been in the front of the line helping to ensure quality science education in the United States by developing resources--and by standing by beleaguered teachers whenever creationists threaten the integrity of science education in communities everywhere. This terrific issue, edited by Glenn Branch, NCSE's Deputy Director, tells the tale of Genie and her multifaceted career--a "must-read" for all of us who value quality science education in the United States. Thank you, Genie--you are wonderful!
Yes, she is. Via Greg Laden.

Just so you know, this thread will be moderated on the "If you can't say something civil, STFU" principle.

I looked at SP's comment that got sent to the BW, and I would suspect the criteria for "welcome" is "making sense".

RBH, I do think it a good thing to take "egregious" sniping by the PT homeboys to task along with the games of creationists. I will confess to being plenty guilty in that regard.

Am absolutely delighted that Niles and Greg thought Genie was so deserving of this special issue (MEMO TO NILES AND GREG: Thanks, I know of no one else more worthy or deserving of such an honor.) or that the only person who could do such a fine job in guest editing it would be none other than Glenn. This is both a brilliant and wonderful tribute to someone who has stood courageously at the front line of each and every battle against those who have sought to insert their religiously-inspired nonsense into science classrooms for decades.

I recommend reading my reply to your breathtaking inanity that I posted over at BW. Might also be wise too for you to read my praise for Genie Scott, and my ample thanks to Niles, Greg and Glenn for bestowing such a well deserved honor.

This thread is in honor of a friend of mine. I will not accept carping, sniping, or trollish comments on it. So consider it confirmed, troll.

RBH,

Its your thread and you can obviously do as you wish. However, it might save a lot of trouble if you simply spelled out your ROE at the get-go.

John Kwok · 1 July 2010

You are a consumate dunce, Steve P., and are merely demonstrating why I have determined that you are an acutely intellectually-challenged Dishonesty Institute IDiot Borg drone. Now go away and play with others of similar intellectual caliber please:

Congratulations Eugenie!

You are truly the Jackie Robinson of atheism.

I had never thought of trolls as communicable diseases before. I wonder if there's a host-parasite model that can be constructed.

Is that a racist remark?

John Kwok · 4 July 2010

I suggest you heed the same advice I gave to Steve P. I especially dislike reading intellectually-challenged comments such as yours which merely demonstrate the breathtaking inanity of you and your fellow creo trolls "stopping by" here. I also reject your comment on face value as a backhanded slap in the face to a friend and also someone whom I greatly admire:

Hi all,

The current issue of Evolution: Education and Outreach merely caps nearly a year's worth of tributes bestowed upon Genie Scott, of which the first was being named as the recipient of the very first annual Stephen Jay Gould Prize at last year's Evolution meeting (Society for the Study of Evolution).

Think it is appropriate that I note this on the Fourth of July.

Sincerely,

John
