Since this is the Panda's Thumb, it's only appropriate to throw in a photo of the baby pandas just born at the Washington Zoo. All together now…

It appears I've been spreading misinformation againg. Just to clarify, the pic features some Asian baby pandas who were born recently, but there was only one panda born in Washington this week.

I was wondering about that.

Gah!

They have... no... EYES!!!

Gah! They have... no... EYES!!!

And what use is half an eye?? :-)

SEF · 14 July 2005

They've given them a panda-skin rug so they'll feel at home though. ;-) The one on the right seems to have a very hairy chest already.

GuyJ · 14 July 2005

The one on the left has Prof Steve Steve's nose.

...Awwwwww, how cute!

Bleccchhhhh. Newborn mammalians are such pathetic things. Give me a nice newly hatched cobra or mamba any day --- ready to sit up, spread that hood, and defiantly take on all comers. Not blind and helpless like the piddley little furballs. Ahhh, how I wish for global warming to accelerate, so my beloved cold-scalies can once again run roughshod over these upstart warm-fuzzies. Back to the Jurassic!! I say.

Lenny,

Your post reminded me of an article from The Onion:

Who was it who asked "What good is a newborn infant?" . . . . . ?

...Awwwwww, how cute!

Whole new definition of the word "cute," apparently...

Re "The one on the left has Prof Steve Steve's nose."

Well, it'd better give it back! ;)

"Who was it who asked "What good is a newborn infant?" ... . . ?"

Who was it who asked "What good is a newborn infant?"

— Lenny Flank
Benjamin Franklin, apparently. Asked what the use of a new invention was, he replied, "What is the use of a new-born child?" I've also seen it attributed to Michael Faraday, but I think that's a confusion. Asked by Gladstone what the use of electricity was, Faraday is supposed to have replied, not by comparing its potentiality with that of a baby, but by appealing to a baser instinct: "Why sir, there is every possibility that you will soon be able to tax it!"

That's what my Mom said until I turned 18. :>
